Us.
On the 10th of October every year, the World Health Organisation recognizes the day as World Mental Health Day. Every year, they have a theme, and this year's theme is "Psychological First-Aid and the Support people can provide."
So I would like to take this opportunity and write further on the same.
It is not unknown that nowadays everyone is engaging in spreading awareness about mental health, and identifying the importance of mental health. Schools, certain organisations, celebrities, to name a few, are conveying the importance of the same.
Yet, despite everything, why is it that mental health is still held as a stigma? Why is it that there are so many more people who still don't get the required help? Where are we going wrong?
The thing is that when we spread awareness about Mental Health a lot of people just become aware about it. And then claim that they KNOW things. But the truth is that they don't. Being aware about it, and not doing anything when someone you know is dealing with it, is the same as telling everyone bullying is bad, and not helping the person who gets bullied.
Now this does not apply to everyone. But it still is a matter of concern.
There are households all over the world, where this stigma still lives, as strong as it had been in the 20th Century. Just because it isn't seen does not mean it doesn't exist. It very much does. So much so that there are 450 million people (more or less) affected by some sort of mental illness. And mental illness does not only include Depression. Schizophrenia, Panic Disorders, ADHD, etc., are as much of a mental illness as depression. All of them can cause a person to commit suicide as much as the other.
This isn't temporary if not treated. It can get so much worse, for both the person and the people around them.
What I want to convey here is that, just don't be aware. Put it into action. That is as important as spreading awareness, and being aware. It isn't fancy talk. It's reality. We don't want superficial talks, we want real talks.
To those reading this who are dealing with a mental illness, I don't know how you feel. I don't know how hard it is. Because I have never been in your situation. But, if you give yourself courage, and open up to one trusted person, it can help. You are not crazy, and it isn't just a phase.
We are all in this together. There's no him or her or them, it's us.
We all play a significant role.
Lend a hand, and take a hand.
Take Care.
