As human as you
In the 21st century, I don't think that human rights should be a question. It is an everyday living phenomena. We say we have progressed immensely as compared to the prior generations. But, have we? Have we really, when brutality is at its rise, children are dying, women are raped, and there is no sign of justice?
A year or two ago, I came across 'Female Genital Mutilation.' And I was shocked to see such a violation of human rights for girls. So read on! I insist. However you may perceive this piece of writing, nothing, and I mean NOTHING should stop you from being aware of this brutal practise, which I am ashamed and afraid to say that it EXISTS.
Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is nothing but removing of external female genitals, or injury to female genital organs for purposes that are NOT medical. It is as gruesome as it sounds, maybe more. It is, as mentioned above, a clear violation of human rights of girls and women. It is carried out on girls between infancy and age 15 (yes, on MINORS), and also on adult women.
We are very well aware of how some human alterations have caused harm to our environment. The genital is also naturally given. Altering it for cultural and social purposes without a reason is just as harmful as introducing/using any pollutant. The only difference is that it doesn't physically affect the rest of the world; the only person in pain is the person it's carried out on. Unwillingly.
FGM causes so many complications in a female's body, it can sabotage a female's entire life. Our bodies are much more complicated than just what we see externally. Doctors and scientists aren't fools when they don't have a solution to certain problems and diseases. It can cause urinary problems, menstrual problems, some of them are stitched and opened regularly for child birth which as you would've guessed is pretty painful, infections of various types, and also psychological problems.
"More than 3 million girls are estimated to be at risk for FGM annually." -WHO. There are still who are going through this. Maybe even right now, who knows?
I am a girl, I am a human being. If I was a victim of FGM, I wouldn't like it. And as a human being, irrespective of your gender or sex, I don't think you would like it either. YOUR BODY is YOURS ALONE.

"The cutting and sewing of a young child's private parts so that she is substantially damaged for the rest of her life, has no sensation during sex except probably pain, and may well face further damage when she gives birth, is to many an obvious and horrifying violation of that child's rights." -UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka.
